SDLEO WIVES: THE HIDDEN PARTNERS

Since 2010

We are a community of women who have the privilege of being married to law enforcement. This profession comes with great responsibility and is a lifestyle that is often misunderstood by our families and community. I experienced some isolation and a disconnect within my marriage after my law enforcement officer’s partner died in pursuit of a suspect. So it was in 2010 that I recruited four other law enforcement wife friends and began this group. The San Diego Law Enforcement Officer Wives group is for women married (or engaged) to San Diego law enforcement officers that are active, retired, or have reached the end of watch.

As police wives, we experience emotions that other wives don’t, and we have fears that other wives don’t. We deal with shift changes and periods of single-parenting and lonely holidays. Our husbands are often stressed and go through many changes stemming from their careers. Police wives are the hidden partners and, whether or not we realize it, those are big shoes to fill. Our husbands and their on-duty partners receive high quality training, meanwhile we fill our “at-home partner” positions with little or no training and, often, very little support.

SDLEO Wives was created in hopes of helping to bridge that gap. This unique role we fill has its challenges, but you are never alone.
